I've one more mornin'
To wake up singin',
'fore I start walkin'
Down that Lonesome Way.
One more mornin',
'fore I start walkin'
You'd best start talkin',
if you've got things to say.

For I'll soon be beyond any kind of listenin',
Any kind of seein' what you have to say.
I'll soon be beyond any way of knowin'
Which way this road is goin'
Down this Lonesome Way.

I know people,
Who go down gamblin'.
They come home cryin',
The blues. They say,
I've got no one,
To blame but myself.
I took money
And I threw it away.

But I'll soon be beyond such petty troubles,
Chasin' after baubles, wastin' time away.
I'll soon be beyond any way of knowin,
Where this road is goin',
Down this Lonesome Way.

Lord forgive me! I've wasted my time.
I've gambled my life away.
Girl, so help me!
I never meant to hurt you.
I never meant to leave you this a' way.
I've one more mornin',
To wake up singin',
'fore I start walkin'
down that Lonesome Way.
Lonesome Way.

You've got one more mornin'.
What do you want me to know from you?
You'd best start talkin',
If you've got things to say.
I've got one more mornin',
To wake up singin',
'fore I start walkin'
down that Lonesome Way.
Lonesome Way.
Lonesome Way.

I was cruising home across Ohio from a wonderful weekend with a friend and decided to leave the radio off. I began to sing "Momma's Little Baby loves shortenin', shortenin'", and went into "Old Man River", and then sang, in that basso-profundo voice, the rather theatrical first line, and original title, "One More Mornin'." It sounds like he's in jail, maybe death row. She may be pregnant or just hurt that he's gotten himself into this place where he can't pursue a life with her, and, instead, has one more morning to wake up singing before he starts walking, perhaps to the gallows.
