River Girls don't say 'No' often.
If they do you'd best keep walkin'.
Their Mommas spot a slick, quick-talkin'
Cowboy on the make.

I met a girl down the Ohio.
She taught me things,
Oh! Me oh! My oh!
I guess I'll never know just why
She gave me a break.

Her lips were soft and so delicious.
Her Momma never seemed suspicious.
We skinny-dipped among the fishes
In her Daddy's lake.

Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.

(Instrumental Interlude)

(Slowly)
Girls like her don't come along often.
She makes me want to stop my walkin'.
I guess me and her Daddy need to do some talkin'.
Oh! For goodness sake!

Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.
Oh! Oh! River Girls.

"River Girls" has been a long time coming. A month or more I've been doodling with the rhythm and wondering what the story is. The first lines seemed like some feller just telling another feller about River Girls, without any real involvement of himself. But finally he told the rest of his story, about how he met a River Girl and what happened. I enjoyed the feeling that it was set back in olden days when "slick, quick-talkin' cowboys" roamed the Ohio river towns and Mommas spotted them. And, even though the skinny-dipping was a bit promiscuous for those times, it was probably often the case, and how people made the commitments to be our grandmothers and grandfathers.
