Darlin', Where Is The Love,
That you took from me?
Where Is The Love,
I gave you willingly?
Where Is The Love?
I want it back, you see.
Where Is The Love?

I remember when you said,
"Come September, we'll be wed."
You left me standing at the altar,
Instead.
I had no doubt.
I made plans,
We'd be walking out,
hand in hand.
You left me empty-handed,
Instead.

Darlin', Where Is The Love,
That you took from me?
Where Is The Love,
I gave you willingly?
Where Is The Love?
I want it back, you see.
Where Is The Love?

Summer weather came and went,
But it never made a dent,
In my heartache.
Oh! My aching head.

I was willing to compromise.
I was willing to sacrifice.
But something's missing in your eyes.

Darlin', Where Is The Love,
That you took from me?
Where Is The Love,
I gave you willingly?
Where Is The Love?
I want it back, you see.
Where Is The Love?
Where Is The Love?
Where Is The Love?

I awoke from a dream at three a.m. where I was standing with my guitar in front of a low stage with a band on it, and we had been singing the Chorus of this song, which, in three-part harmony, was a real blaster! Bring on the saxophone! Bleary-eyed as I was, I sang it out (Living alone you can do that at 3 a.m.) Still awake, I strummed a few chords, C and Am, and strained through it, writing the first couple of verses. Later I tried it in this key and several others.

Mostly it's just a rhyme, a flaw of which I'm very critical (when other people do it). But I like the line about wanting the love back, and, in the story, she/he leaves him/her standing at the altar, empty-handed, no hand-in-hand and no ring on it. So the theme does have a little substance.
