Hattie Said To Jesus,
"Can you show me the way,
Out of this grotto,
To the light of day?"
She said, "It's not just the season."
She said, "It's not just my way."
She said, "I've got a good reason.
I just need to get away!"

Hattie followed Jesus,
Down a twisting way.
As the light got darker,
Hattie thought to say,
"You know it's not just for pleasure.
You know it's not just for play."
She said, "It's not just my leisure time.
I've got to get away."

But Jesus grinned,
Mischievously.
He said, "I know a place.,
Where you can rest your weary head,
Where you can hide your face."
He said, "I wouldn't mislead you.
You can trust what I say."
He thought,
'You know that I need you.
I too need to get away.'

Jesus said to Hattie,
"It's just too late,
But this is my home girl.
Stay here. Be safe.
So Jesus talked of cabbages,
and walruses and kings,
Religion and politics,
And other forbidden things.
He said, "I'm not tryin' to trick you.
I'm not makin' a play."
He said, "I'm happy just to be with you."
And so they passed the night away.

Jesus said to Hattie,
"I see the morning light.
I can take you out now.
I hope you had a good night."

He said, "It's not just the season."
He said, "It's not just my way."
He said, "I've got a good reason.
I just need to get away."

But Hattie grinned
Mischeivously.
She said, "I know, A place,
Where you can rest your weary head,
Where you can hide your face."
She said, "I wouldn't mislead you.
You can trust what I say."
She thought, 'You know that I need you.
I too need to, get away.'

I don't know where Hattie and Jesus came from. It's actually clever how she flips the assertive stance, mischeivously, in the final stanza.
